Why did my rent payment fail, and what should I do?

Common reasons a rent payment shows Failed or is declined, and how to fix it.

A Failed status means your payment was submitted but couldn't finish processing, so your landlord didn't receive it. You'll need to pay again once the cause is fixed.

Common reasons

  • Not enough funds. The bank account didn't have enough money when the payment was processed.

  • Balance check didn't pass. Some landlords turn on a balance check that confirms funds before an ACH payment goes through. If the balance is too low, the payment is declined before it's sent.

  • A problem with the payment method. The bank account was closed or changed, or the card expired or was declined by your card issuer.

  • Partial payment not allowed. If your landlord requires full payment, a payment for less than the balance due won't go through.

What to do

  1. Make sure the account or card has enough funds.

  2. If your bank account or card changed, add the new one as your payment method. See Setting Up a Bank Account for PayRent.

  3. Make the payment again. See How to Make a Payment.

  4. If you have scheduled payments, check that they use the right payment method. See How to Edit a Scheduled Payment.
